The Best Skincare Products Beneficial for Oily and Acne-Prone Skin

For people with oily skin, finding the perfect skincare routine is confusing and complicated. Although oily skin type easily clogs pores and increases the chances of a breakout, there are absolutely ways to prevent it and improve one’s skin condition.

According to Melanie Palm, MD, a board-certified dermatologist serving in San Diego, California area, products for oily skin should always be non-comedogenic as these products don’t clog pores.

Other dermatologists recommend checking labels and buying products with active ingredients such as sulfur, retinol, and salicylic acid. These can help your oil glands function more normally.

Of course, caring for oily skin is easier said than done. Here are some routine tips we curated for better skincare:


Washing regularly can reduce the amount of oil on the skin. Use cleansers that contain ingredients to help dissolve excess sebum, these ingredients can be sulfur, salicylic acid, or tea tree oil. The active ingredients help improve the skin’s overall tone and texture.

According to Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Lisa Pruett, when it comes to cleansing, being gentle is key. She also stated that exfoliating should be done to a minimum (once or twice a week tops).

Based on a study conducted in 2015, washing the face twice a day with a facial cleanser based on AEC/soap is effective care for moderate or less grade facial acne.

Tone AM PM

For others, toner with alcohol can cause irritation and dryness. However, natural astringents such as Rose Water, Witch Hazel, Green Tea, and Apple Cider Vinegar have beneficial properties for the skin.

You may also use a mild, alcohol-free toner to remove impurities after cleansing.

Toning can be considered another type of cleansing where it helps removes impurities that are not removed by washing them.


“The reason why we tell you to moisturize is that we’re wanting you to repair your skin barrier that’s getting broken down by the mask all day,” said Lisa Pruett, MD.

Moisturizing is important even with oily skin. This process helps the skin stay plump, healthy, and dewy. 


Use Medical-Astringent Every Other Day

Using medical-grade astringent can be your best friend if you have excessively oily skin. As it can have a high amount of alcohol, astringents should be used every other day and not more than that to avoid drying or irritating the skin.

Exfoliate Once a Week

Exfoliating your skin is as important as washing it because it can remove deep-seated dirt that clogged pores. Dead skin cells also build up on the surface of the skin. Add this process to help remove dirt from the skin’s facade. Gently exfoliate once or twice a week, depending on your needs.
